Age and success rate For Intra Uterine Insemination

For anyone planning to resort to Intra Uterine Insemination (IUI), an understanding of factors impinging on likely success rates is a must. One of the main factors remains the age of the patient.

Couples would be aware that under normal medical conditions, the chances of natural pregnancy per cycle of ovulation depend on the age of the woman and stands at between 20-25 %.

This percentage tends to taper off significantly as the age advances, dropping to as low as 5% by the age of 40. This is a natural phenomenon that manifests due to a decline in the quality of eggs within the ovaries. Coming to couples that have found it difficult to achieve a pregnancy which could be on account of varied reasons, there is hope unless both the tubes are completely blocked or there is total absence of sperm or ovulation.

  • Solace lies in the assurance that IUI success rates for pregnancy are pretty close to the natural rate per ovulation cycle.

  • The issue is not the rate of success but the likelihood that one may have to go through the process a number of times before a pregnancy is achieved.

  • If you are lucky however, you may be successful in the first attempt itself so unless you try IUI, you will never know.

Impact of medical conditions on IUI success rates

IUI Success Rates pictureSuccess rate of IUI also hinge on the prognosis of the affected couple. There are many couples who are facing problems in achieving a pregnancy because of infertility and the main cause of this is ovulatory dysfunction or total absence of regular ovulation; a condition called ‘polycystic ovary syndrome’.

Once the condition is cured, one comes pretty close to the natural per-cycle pregnancy rate. At times couples are found struggling because of the male factor and here superovulation is quite effective.

1.  There are many other conditions that impinge on IUI success like diseased fallopian tubes, endometriosis or even egg quality.

2.  This is because of the fact that superovulation cannot improve the quality of eggs within the ovaries. Factually, if egg quality is bad, nothing much can be done.

3.  It is also critical that fallopian tubes where initial fertilization takes place for the embryo to form, to be free of obstructions.

4.  With damaged or blocked tubes the chances of fertilization reduce considerably. Even if the embryo forms its early growth gets hampered as it struggles to make its way to the uterine cavity for implantation.

IUI Success Rates imageThere are many facilities promising encouragingly high IUI success rates but prudence lies in being careful in opting for a fully competent one. Some advocate that success rates are higher when IUI is done in combination with fertility drugs. Risk of multiple pregnancies exists unless your doctor pays close attention to administration of drugs like Clomiphene.

Lastly, the procedure ensures better success where the male suffers from mild to moderate infertility than severe. In extreme cases, there is always the option of banking on a sperm donor. Basically, if you are not touching the higher age bracket in a hurry, do not worry; you have a fairly decent chance of getting what you desire.
